A barely noticeable image, 0.gif, and a link are added to the lower right corner of nin.com/index.html
It links to eight "secret" pages that will become known as the "bleed-through puzzle" and "The Lathe of Heaven images"...
halo/1.html -> halo/2.html -> halo/3.html -> halo/4.html -> halo/5.html -> halo/6.html -> halo/7.html -> halo/8.html
Pages 1 though 7 have embedded gif images that contain cryptic quotes and messages. Page 8 is a dead end. It doesn't have an embedded image or hyperlink. Over the next few days, people begin to decipher and link the quotes to certain pieces of work (see list of images below). In the midst of this, the pages and images are also being changed.

1.html -> 2.html -> 7.html -> 4.html -> 5.html -> 6.html -> 3.html -> 8.html
(However, the images are in the same order as before.)

A. The black background, 004.gif, on page 4 is discovered to have a binary encoded message visible after adjusting the brightness/contrast levels.
B. The image on page 7 disappears.

It's noticed that 004.gif changed to a second binary message. It has been chopped and misaligned down the center.
2003.07.09.15.00
A. 6.gif on page 6 changed from the Nathaniel S. Clark quote to a second quote from The Lathe of Heaven.
B. 004.gif is removed from page 4.
C. 4.gif becomes transparent.
2003.07.13
From here on out, the remaining visible gif images are often modified. The white ones become whiter and the black ones become blacker... fading into the pages' background color.

B. 0.gif changed from black with a grey smudge to grey with a white smudge

None of the "secret" pages have visible graphics. They are all just white or black.

0.gif and the link in the bottom right corner of nin.com/index to the "secret" pages are gone.
2003.10 through 2003.12
The background images of the dboard rooms are slowly darkened causing the board's text to fade into the background until no longer visible.
